2016 KMU Movie Preview, Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad, a can’t miss action thriller.
ssblogphoto
On Friday August 5, 2016; Suicide Squad will be coming out in theaters across the nation. This film focuses on some of the man villains of DC Comics universe, rather than their hero counterparts. This alone is drawing the interest of many people, myself included. In Suicide Squad villains Harley Quinn and Joker are recruited by the government, and sent to destroy said government’s enemies. Another villain, Deadshot, who specializes with firearms, is the one that I am particularly looking forward to seeing, because according to his backstory he never misses a shot. I for one am fascinated by the concept of Suicide Squad and am incredibly excited to see it, because as I said it will focus on the villains, and I think  that this factor along will make the movie enticing to all that love DC Comics, and even those who don’t.

Use PokémonGO to Recruit for Your Youth Group

Today, we have a guest blog post from the original writer for the PA DeMolay blog, "Dad" Seth Anthony. Thank you "Dad" Anthony for contributing to the blog.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past week, you’ve probably heard about the new social sensation PokémonGO. Marketed as an augmeneted reality game, PokémonGO uses the real world as part of the play experience. Players collect Pokémon characters by walking around their local areas. In addition to the creatures themselves, players can also interact with points of interest as determined by the game, such as statues, parks, memorials, and yes, Masonic Lodges.

Many Masonic Lodges have been tagged by the game, either as Pokestops, where players can earn power ups and experience points, or as Gyms, where participants can train their Pokémon and battle other players. This has resulted in increased traffic around many Masonic buildings and brought new light to the fraternity as players discover our meeting places for the first time. This includes teens and tweens who are seeking out our facilities for their in-game benefits.

And therein lies the power of the game! With all of these new people visiting your building, what are you doing to market Masonic Youth to them? Picture this – a group of teens hanging around outside our Masonic building, battling their Pokémon. You already have something in common with them and a great conversation starter to break the ice! Ask them what team they are on and start up a conversation. Then, transition into talking about how you’re at this building a lot because your youth group meets here. Discuss what you do and how your members are also playing the game. Instantly, you’ve made a connection and found a potential member!

Perhaps you can take it one step further. Why not set up a booth and welcome players? You could even make it a prospect party event, especially if your Lodge is a Gym. As they approach your building, provide them with a grab bag that includes a healthy snack, some information for your organization, and other promotional material. Have your members battle it out and challenge visitors to a battle! Don’t forget to chat with the parents; this is a great chance for advisors to meet prospective parents and build their advisory councils as well!

PokémonGO is an amazing opportunity for your Masonic Youth Groups to utilize your meeting space to reach out to potential members. Don’t waste the chance to build your membership!

Survey Says: How to Improve the PA DeMolay Product

A few weeks ago, I put together a survey to try to get an idea of the areas in which we can improve the overall PA DeMolay product. I'm happy to say that we had 58 members and advisors take the time to fill out this survey. Here are a few of the things that I have learned throughout the survey:

In terms of the Keystone Crusader:

  • 32.8% would like to receive the Keystone Crusader through social media or email.
  • A large portion of the group would like some new content to the publication.
  • Some families receive multiple copies of the newsletter, and would like that lowered.

In terms of bringing back a PA DeMolay activity:

  • 30% would like to see 007 weekend back in the future and 24% would like NERF weekend back in the future.
  • A good portion of the "other" responses wanted the Athletic program back.
  • The major thing that can be taken out of the results of this question; if the members will support it then we should do it.

In terms of the Athletics program:

  • Almost half of the people surveyed want the Athletics program brought back as a feature to the programs we currently have.
  • About 38% want the Athletics program brought back the way we had it.
  • Make sure that brotherhood is the most important lesson if the program is brought back.

In terms of a specific Athletic Program:

  • 42% want to bring back the Flag Football weekend
  • 21% want Basketball weekend back
  • A good amount would like to see brotherhood style since some chapters cannot field teams.

In terms of ritual:

  • 52% of the people surveyed think that all options should be used. The options were assigning a youth director, hold ritual competitions and set aside time at state weekends for ritual programs.
  • Some people think that if ritual is pushed too hard, we could lose members. Find a way to make it fun.
  • A few people are not in favor of the idea of a youth director

In terms of Call Em All:

  • 33% of people say that their chapter uses it all of the time.
  • about 20% would prefer a text message than a phone call from a machine.
  • The chapters that don't use it state that they prefer personal phone calls because of the small number of members.

In terms of the squire program (a program designed for 9 to 11 year old boys prepping them for DeMolay):

  • 45% think that the squire program is a great idea to get young guys ready for DeMolay.
  • 25% of people need more information about the program, including success rates from other jurisdictions.
  • A majority of people think that it's a great idea, but it will need added support from advisors to make it happen.

In terms of the website and blog page:

  • Some people think that the web page needs more updates, especially chapter specific news.
  •  A lot of people like the idea of the blog and would like to see guest bloggers as well.
  • Content needs to be more youth oriented.
In terms of new programming for PA DeMolay:

  • Some people would like the idea of video blogs, interviews and podcasts added to the content.
  • A few people like the idea of teaching more life skill oriented programs such as finance, resume building and time management.
  • A few people think that a statewide community service project is a good idea.

In terms of membership:

  •  A lot people think that we should have better incentive programs
  • Some would like to see updated chapter brochures.
  • Advertise

Suggestions, Concerns Complaints:

  • Find ways to encourage smaller chapters to participate.
  • Some people like the idea of bringing in guest speakers.
  • We need to focus on keeping members and recruiting advisors.

Thank you to everyone who helped out by voicing their opinions on the matter. Here at the PA DeMolay office, we take all recommendations into consideration in order to make this a well rounded product for members and advisors. We have already worked on improving some of these requests, and look forward to making more in the near future.

Gridiron Gang: Fran Tarkenton

With Super Bowl 50 taking place in a little over a week, I figured this is a good time to acknowledge the former football stars that were, or currently are, part of our Masonic Family. We start with a former member of the Order of DeMolay, legendary Quarterback Fran Tarkenton.

Francis Asbury Tarkenton, who later shortened the name to Fran, was born on February 3rd, 1940 in Richmond, Virginia. He became the star Quarterback for Athens High School, where he led the team to a state championship in 1955. It was during his time in high school that Tarkenton found DeMolay, joining Frank Hardeman Chapter from Athens, Georgia in 1954. He attended the University of Georgia, where he led the Bulldogs to the Southeast Conference Championship and to the Orange Bowl. He became an All-American athlete for the Georgia Bulldogs.

In 1961, Tarkenton was drafted in the third round of the NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. In his first NFL game, Tarkenton threw 4 touchdowns, an accomplishment that had not been repeated until this past year when Marcus Mariota of the Tennessee Titans made the same accomplishment. Tarkenton became known as a mobile Quarterback, often referred to as “The Mad Scrambler” or “Frantic Fran.” In 1968, after playing his first 6 seasons for the Minnesota Vikings, he was traded to the New York Giants. In 1972, which would prove to be the prime of his career, Tarkenton was traded back to the Minnesota Vikings. From here, Tarkenton would lead the Vikings to 3 Super Bowls in 4 years, unfortunately missing out on all three tries. Tarkenton was named the League MVP in 1975 and was selected a total of 9 times to the Pro Bowl team. Tarkenton became a Pro Football Hall of Famer in 1986.

After his playing days were over, Tarkenton became a very well-known business man. Tarkenton has started twelve businesses, including a multi-million dollar computer software company that he sold in 1994. He also became known as a motivational speaker and an author, writing the books “What Losing Taught Me about Winning,” and “How to Motivate People: The Team Strategy for Success.”

In 1986, the same year Tarkenton was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, DeMolay International inducted him into the DeMolay Hall of Fame. He was a Senior DeMolay as well as an Active Legion of Honor recipient. This Hall of Fame class was the inaugural class for DeMolay International.

“It is a great honor to be inducted into the DeMolay Hall of Fame. In today’s society where there is so much violence and heartache, it’s a gratifying feeling to know there is such a fine organization as DeMolay to look up to and lean on for guidance and support. I am proud to be a member!”

Be proud of who you are, both as a person and as a DeMolay.

Happy Holidays!

On behalf of the Pennsylvania DeMolay office, I'd like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Safe travels to all whom are visiting family and friends for the holiday season. My goal is to get one more blog post in before the year is over, but if I'm  unable to do so, Happy New Year to all as well!

What I've learned while blogging...

Last week, we reached a milestone with our 500th post. First, let me thank "Dad" Labagh for stepping up and writing the post to mark the occasion. It was much appreciated. As I reflect back on having written several hundred posts, I'm reminded of one of "Dad" Labagh's favorite lines - "What have you learned?"

I asked myself this question. What have I learned from operating a blog for several years and writing so much? This has been just as much a learning experience for me, as it has for those who read the blog, which is fantastic on so many levels.

With that mind, here's my list of 5, in no particular order:

1. "Posts can come from anywhere." - I quickly learned that writing about DeMolay twice a week can be challenging. However, when you apply the lessons or ideals of DeMolay to other articles or trends, it becomes much easier to produce content.

2. "Don't be afraid of controversy." - We've had our share of controversial posts on this blog, written by several different members and friends of PA DeMolay. A little controversy can help drive your readership and keep things interesting.

3. "Plan to post." - I try to make sure that if I can't make a posting on a Monday or Thursday, that I have someone else cover for me. This spices things up a bit and provides others the chance to share their ideas.

4. "Timeliness is key." - Ensuring that posts occur when they are supposed to is one of the most important things. When posts don't go up on time, people stop reading. Consistency is your friend.

5. "Appeal to the masses." - Some of our most read posts are those that appeal to a broader group than just friends of DeMolay. By producing content that appeals to them, we expose more people to what our program is and what a great organization we have.

Blogging isn't always easy or fun, but the value of this site has proven to be enormous and I look forward to posting for several more years to come!

Millenial Masonry

DeMolay is not now, nor has it ever been, a "junior Masonic Lodge." However, with it being sponsored by the Masonic fraternity, many young men decide to join Freemasonry as their DeMolay career culminates. The transition between DeMolay and Freemason is a rewarding, yet challenging one. It's akin to going from the age of boy to man, when you now sit in Lodge with your father and grandfather, being on equal level with them.

As young men, under the age of 30, become members of Lodges, their expectations of membership are often at odds with what they thought the experience would be. Their ideal of what the fraternity is rarely matches up with what they find beyond the portals of the Lodge. Interestingly though, many find the experience an educational one, even if it didn't exactly match their preconceived notions.

Recently, I came across a blog from a young Freemason named Nick Johnson. Nick's website is called "The Millennial Freemason" and documents his experiences with the Masonic Fraternity. I follow Nick's blog pretty regularly, as it gives me insight into what other young Masons are experiencing outside of Pennsylvania. Plus, Nick has a great writing style and a good sense of humor. I strongly encourage you to check it and get an idea of what young Freemasons are feeling as they embark on their Masonic journey.

Keep on Bloggin'

I'm going to take a step back today and be a little "meta" post (in the words of Troy and Abed from the TV "Community.") This humble little blog has reached another milestone of sorts. As of this post, the PA DeMolay blog has 400 posts. Thanks to those four hundred posts, we about to surpass 100,000 page views.

With that in mind, let's do a little recap / statistical analysis. This blog went live on January 4, 2010 - just a little over 3 years ago. When you take the number of days divided by the number of posts (400 / 1190), that's a new post every three days! Many blogs can't claim that kind of a robust content schedule, but we're proud that we have. This blog remains the most active and content driven communications piece in ALL of DeMolay International and Pennsylvania is the only jurisdiction operating this kind of site. All PA DeMolay's should be proud of that fact!

Now, on to the fun stuff. Who's looking at this blog? There aren't many surprises there - many of the countries are strong supporters of DeMolay and Freemasonry. The top ten views by Country are:

A Double Check

Being the Director of Communications for PMYF means that I do a lot of writing. Between the Masonic Youth Minutes, this blog, the websites, and several other publications, I'm constantly churning out documents and pieces for publication. While we do our best to proof read each other here in the office, sometimes we're all very busy and we can't turn things around fast enough. This was becoming a bit of a problem, so I decided to take matters into my own hands and find another proofreading option.

That's when I stumbled across www.paperrater.com. This website is totally free to use and it will do a grammar check, spell check, word count, and language analysis on any written piece. It has saved me a lot of headaches with my writing. I now routinely use it to check my blog posts, website updates, and written articles.

If you're looking to get a piece of work proofed for school or another organization, I highly recommend giving this valuable tool a try!

Over Looked Blog Posts

Some of you have been following the PA DeMolay blog for quite some time, while others may have just picked up on it recently. With the coming of our 300th post, I thought it would be nice to look back at 10 articles which I think are often overlooked. Take a moment and go back and read a couple of these posts - heck, you might even have missed something the first time through!

1. Creativity and Careful Writing Win Essays Everytime - this post contains an essay written by Bro. Jonathan Webster of Delaware Valley Chapter. It's a great piece of about DeMolay in the past and the future.

2. Are you being served? - A discussion on service leadership.

3. Repercussions of Elections - What happens when someone wins or loses and election?

4. The DeMolay Degree - Fact or Fiction? - A historical account of the events portrayed in the DeMolay Degree.

5. Pins and Opinions - An Op-Ed piece about DeMolay awards by Matt Blaisdell, State Master Councilor.

6. History Nerds Unite - a recounting of historical research for PA DeMolay.

7. The Obligatory Post - Just what are the Obligatory Days all about? Find out here!

8. Did you say bi-cameral? - A post about how PA is governed.

9. DeMolay International Archives - A Photo Collection - Pictures from my trip to DeMolay International.

10. A Closer Look at Regalia - Part II: Collars - What are those silly things around our necks?

Thanks for looking and we'll see you on Thursday!

Bay State Blog

Just a quick update here...

I would like to welcome another DeMolay Jurisdiction into the world of blogging. Recently, after we featured an article by "Dad" Brian Noble, EO of Massachusetts DeMolay, we found out that they have entered the blogging world.

Titled the "Bay State News," the Massachusetts blog already has some great articles on it - especially one about the potentials of using Facebook as a professional tool. I have a feeling "Dad" Noble will be posting some great content there, so check it out!

Futurama

I realized last week that this humble little blog has recently passed some major milestones and is on its way to reaching a few more. This post is number 252 for the PA DeMolay blog. Our first post was created on January 4, 2010, just a couple months short of two years ago. While two years may not seem like a long time to some (and may seem like an eternity to others) in the world of the internet, that's an incredible amount of time. To our knowledge, there is no other DeMolay related blog that has been as consistently updated for any length as this one. However, anecdotal evidence doesn't make a case, so I'd like to share with you some statistics related to this site.
  • Views to date: 23,394
  • Most Views in a Single Month: August 2010 with 2,434 views.
  • Average Views Per Month (Over the last 12 months) - Just above 1500
  • Average Views Per Month (Last Quarter) - Just above 2000
  • Most Popular Post A Closer Look at Regalia: Part 1 - Aiguillettes - Posted August 19, 2010 (767 views)
  • Largest Referring Site: Google
  • Largest Referral by Link: http://freemasonsfordummies.blogspot.com/
  • Top Five Search Words:
    • Unplug - 113
    • Aiguillette - 100
    • Aiguillettes - 79
    • Colonel Mustard Costume - 29
    • DeMolay - 24
Now some of you may be looking at those search terms and thinking "What in the heck?!?" Actually, those terms are good for the Blog. Why? While they may not be truly DeMolay related, they are bringing people to our Blog who are looking for something else. While they are here, they are probably learning at least a little bit about DeMolay, which is a very good thing! Just where do those viewers come from? Here is a break down of the top countries that check out this site:

United States
14,354
Philippines
1,567
Brazil
1,254
Canada
898
France
632
United Kingdom
486
Germany
241
Netherlands
186
Russia
175
Australia
166

Obviously the top four countries are all major areas for DeMolay, which explains their high hit rate.

So, where is the blog going from here? That's a tough question. It's interesting to see how the blog has changed over time, but I know that it will continue to grow and prosper. As always, I'm open to new contributors and people who would like to have their opinion heard. Just drop your article in an e-mail to webmaster@pademolay.org and we can talk about posting it!

Also, in the coming months, I will be doing a new feature called "Active DeMolay Spotlight." Like our popular Senior DeMolay Spotlight series, these articles will highlight what some of our current members are doing in their homes and communities. This is a great way for Active DeMolays to get their name out there to College Recruiters  Community Leaders, and other DeMolays (hint hint for those of you thinking of running for Elected State Office next year!)

So, stay tuned for another year and see where the Blog takes you!
