Survey Says: How to Improve the PA DeMolay Product

A few weeks ago, I put together a survey to try to get an idea of the areas in which we can improve the overall PA DeMolay product. I'm happy to say that we had 58 members and advisors take the time to fill out this survey. Here are a few of the things that I have learned throughout the survey:

In terms of the Keystone Crusader:

  • 32.8% would like to receive the Keystone Crusader through social media or email.
  • A large portion of the group would like some new content to the publication.
  • Some families receive multiple copies of the newsletter, and would like that lowered.

In terms of bringing back a PA DeMolay activity:

  • 30% would like to see 007 weekend back in the future and 24% would like NERF weekend back in the future.
  • A good portion of the "other" responses wanted the Athletic program back.
  • The major thing that can be taken out of the results of this question; if the members will support it then we should do it.

In terms of the Athletics program:

  • Almost half of the people surveyed want the Athletics program brought back as a feature to the programs we currently have.
  • About 38% want the Athletics program brought back the way we had it.
  • Make sure that brotherhood is the most important lesson if the program is brought back.

In terms of a specific Athletic Program:

  • 42% want to bring back the Flag Football weekend
  • 21% want Basketball weekend back
  • A good amount would like to see brotherhood style since some chapters cannot field teams.

In terms of ritual:

  • 52% of the people surveyed think that all options should be used. The options were assigning a youth director, hold ritual competitions and set aside time at state weekends for ritual programs.
  • Some people think that if ritual is pushed too hard, we could lose members. Find a way to make it fun.
  • A few people are not in favor of the idea of a youth director

In terms of Call Em All:

  • 33% of people say that their chapter uses it all of the time.
  • about 20% would prefer a text message than a phone call from a machine.
  • The chapters that don't use it state that they prefer personal phone calls because of the small number of members.

In terms of the squire program (a program designed for 9 to 11 year old boys prepping them for DeMolay):

  • 45% think that the squire program is a great idea to get young guys ready for DeMolay.
  • 25% of people need more information about the program, including success rates from other jurisdictions.
  • A majority of people think that it's a great idea, but it will need added support from advisors to make it happen.

In terms of the website and blog page:

  • Some people think that the web page needs more updates, especially chapter specific news.
  •  A lot of people like the idea of the blog and would like to see guest bloggers as well.
  • Content needs to be more youth oriented.
In terms of new programming for PA DeMolay:

  • Some people would like the idea of video blogs, interviews and podcasts added to the content.
  • A few people like the idea of teaching more life skill oriented programs such as finance, resume building and time management.
  • A few people think that a statewide community service project is a good idea.

In terms of membership:

  •  A lot people think that we should have better incentive programs
  • Some would like to see updated chapter brochures.
  • Advertise

Suggestions, Concerns Complaints:

  • Find ways to encourage smaller chapters to participate.
  • Some people like the idea of bringing in guest speakers.
  • We need to focus on keeping members and recruiting advisors.

Thank you to everyone who helped out by voicing their opinions on the matter. Here at the PA DeMolay office, we take all recommendations into consideration in order to make this a well rounded product for members and advisors. We have already worked on improving some of these requests, and look forward to making more in the near future.

A Bro-Tie Earned

The Bro-Tie mentoring initiative is a program that encourages experienced DeMolay members to get to know the newer members of the chapter a lot better. Mentors are to teach the new members the basics of DeMolay so it becomes a more comfortable environment for them. The mentor receives a black bow-tie, while the new member receives a red bow-tie. A questionnaire is filled out to determine that the mentoring has taken place. When the mentoring has occurred, the two members will exchange a half of their bow-tie, creating a red and black tie known as the Bro Tie.

At 007: Secret Agent Weekend, PA DeMolay announced its first two graduates of the Bro-Tie program. Brothers Jake Yarnall (the mentor) and Justin Nixon (the new member), both of Allentown Chapter, received and displayed their Bro-Ties for all to see. A new friendship has taken place, and now Justin understands more about the organization. In fact, Justin was recently installed as Senior Deacon of Allentown Chapter.

If you'd like to wear one of these cool Bro-Ties, you need to earn one. There is still plenty of time, so reach out to a new member and teach him the important lessons of brotherhood and comradeship.

Happy DeMolay Month to all!

Until next time - "Dad" Joe Pullin

Be Different Spotlight: Friendship-Bray Chapter

The following post is part of a series entitled the “Be Different Spotlight.” This post will display a chapter’s effort to grasp the concept of the theme for this year. Each chapter was challenged by the State Master Councilor, Adam Pritchard, to “Be Different.”

Challenge Accepted! This is the story of how Friendship-Bray Chapter embraced that challenge...

On Tuesday, December 8th, 2015 members and advisors of Friendship-Bray Chapter visited Baldi Middle School in the Fox Chase section of Philadelphia. The event, which was organized by FBC advisor and Fox Chase Elementary School Principal “Dad” Rob Caroselli, was a first look at DeMolay for many young men in Northeast Philadelphia and the surrounding communities.

Young men and parents were invited to a question and answer session about what the organization has to offer. While the young men were excited to hear about events like Operation N.A.S.H.V.I.L.L.E. Training Weekend and Laser Tag, the parents were thrilled to hear that DeMolay and its advisors strive to help make its members better sons and good upstanding citizens. The Chapter was prepared with brochures provided by PA DeMolay and personalized for our specific Chapter and events.

Four of the seven young men present received their obligations January 3rd and will receive their complete degrees at Patriots Class on February 13th. Two other young men who have attended a few of the recent Chapter activates will also receive their degrees at Patriots Class.

The new members have already talked about bringing their friends into the Chapter after the amazing time they had at Operation N.A.S.H.V.I.L.L.E. Training Weekend. We expect the size of FBC to double in the coming months.

Friendship-Bray continues to stand out and BE DIFFERENT. On March 6th at the stated meeting of Friendship-Bray Chapter, the members will kick off DeMolay Month by hosting dozens of visiting Masons including several District Deputy Grand Masters. This exposure and excitement will undoubtedly continue the resurgence of the once again Mighty FBC! Here we grow again!

This blog post was written by Friendship-Bray's Chapter Advisor, "Dad" Dennis Hunter.. Thank you "Dad" Hunter for your contribution.

Friendship-Bray Chapter has completed the challenge to “Be Different.” What has your chapter done in order to change things up a bit? Send in program details or write a post for your chapter and send it to me at JAPullin@pademolay.net.

Meet the KMU Staff: The Program and Event Planning Department

In a DeMolay Chapter you hold a lot of “fun events and programs” but contrary to popular belief they don’t just appear out of thin air!

We are willing to spill the beans and let you in on the magic it takes to make these activities really POP, standout, and keep up the intensity in your Chapter!

Through this class you will learn:
  • How to come up with an idea and what it takes to develop the plan.
  • You will learn the difference between an Event and a Program.
  • You will learn what a timeline is, how to develop one, and work with the framework.
  • You will be able to make your Chapter your own and realize when you need your advisors advice to keep things on track.
  • You will learn how to develop an extended Chapter project.
So, who’s going to teach you this? Well, let’s meet your Instructors!

“Dad” Jake Palo is a Technology Education teacher at Olean High School in New York.  He has been involved with DeMolay for over 50% of his life, as he joined Erie Chapter when he was twelve years old. This marks his twelfth year being associated with the Order.  He served as the Master Councilor of Erie Chapter and also as PA DeMolay’s 74th State Master Councilor.  DeMolay has played a tremendous role in his life and it is his goal to give back to the Order.

“Dad” Herald Casana works as a Network Support professional for Telus Communications Inc. in Alberta, Canada.  He is originally from the Philippines and immigrated to Canada in 2007 with his family. He also teaches Filipino Martial Arts in his spare time. He’s been involved in Freemasonry since 2012 and currently serves as one of the Advisors for Edmonton Chapter.

Chairing  the Department is “Dad” Bruce Neubauer who, over the past 40 years, has worked in private industry. Through hard work and dedication, he has worked my way up through the ranks to become the Pricing Manager for a Plumbing Supply company in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.  He has been an Advisor for Westmoreland Chapter since May of 2009 and the Advisory Board Chairman since 2010. He was the Advisory Board Chairman of Irwin Assembly No. 42, Order of the Rainbow Girls, from 1986 to 1988.  Says “Dad” Neubauer – “If there is one thing I have learned through my life experiences it is that you need to set a goal and go after it!”
